Artist Statement

My first oil painting was on a found piece of clear plastic using leftovers from a paint-by-number-kit of horses. Now I explore the quiet beauty of interiors; the abundance of nature up-close and afar; the human form - clothed and unclothed, modest and exuberant; the wondrous shape of small things. Many paintings are Alla Prima, Plein Aire, or beginnings then finished in the studio.

I primarily paint in oils since they impart an almost tangible luminescent quality that transcends the object. Daily, I’ve been exploring gouache, sketching and trying subtractive painting (darks wiped off). When painting I look for the emotional response that comes through the building of a visual image.

Bio

I’m a Washington DC and Maryland based oil painter of representional art, having majored in Studio Art as an undergraduate with summer coursework in Spain and Italy. I was a journalist editor at NPR for 45 years and on retiring completed a 3 year Master Artist program at the Compass Atelier in Maryland. I continue to travel throughout Europe to study art and frequently workshop with master artists. It is on that foundation that I now model my own work, bringing a 21st century view to canvas.
